My April 2016 Blog Income Report – $71,761.30Welcome to April’s online income report where I show you how I made money online last month. It’s time to look at this month’s update and track how I did.

If you’re new here, you may be wondering why I would want to publish my income report each month. You can simply skip to the next section if you’re not new here.

This all started out as my extra income report because in the beginning it was all about the money I was earning from my side jobs. In my side income reports from the beginning, I included all of the income I made except for what I made at my day job.

However, I left my day job as a financial analyst in October of 2013 and now my monthly income reports consist of the many ways I earn a living.

Many have asked why I would ever want to publicly post my income each month. Some think I’m crazy, whereas some are glad I’m open about what I’m doing. Whatever you think, I enjoy publishing my monthly online income reports and I share them publicly for three main reasons:

  1. Before I started blogging, I knew nothing about side hustling and making money online. I didn’t think side jobs were worth the effort and I thought the only way to significantly increase your income was through raises at your full-time job. If it weren’t for others publishing their monthly income reports, I don’t know if I would have ever tried side hustling. I want to help show others the positives in side hustling and how it can change a person’s life. There are many different ways to make money online, and I like to share my story each month to help motivate others to improve their financial situation by making more money.
  2. Secondly, I like to publish my income reports because it’s a way for me to look back, learn from my mistakes and actually see what areas need improvement. I use my monthly income reports as a way to track how I’ve done and I treat it sort of like a journal.
  3. Lastly, I like to show others that making side money is possible and that there are many legitimate ways to make money from your home. If you are looking for information on the many ways to make money online, I published the article Monthly Income Report Roundup that showcases many successful bloggers who are kind enough to share their income with the public each month.

I know I say this every month, but it’s the truth. Life is great now that I’m my own boss and a full-time blogger. I look forward to each and every day and it’s a wonderful feeling. I truly love waking up every single morning.

Above are just a few of the reasons for why I enjoy publishing my monthly income reports. I like to show others that you don’t have to hate your job and hate your life. You can make changes to your life and make money in a way that allows you to truly enjoy the life you are living. I’m not saying that you have to LOVE your job, I’m just saying that your job should, at least, allow you to do what you like to do outside of work (whether that be spending time with loved ones, painting, hiking, etc.).

How was my blog income in April?

I earned $71,761.30 online in April, before expenses.

Blog income in April was great. It was another great month in terms of income, work-life balance, and more. Page views are still a little down, but income is up. This is why I always say that blog income is not 100% dependent on page views.

I do expect income to go down at least a little for the next couple of months. The summer months are usually a slow time for affiliate marketing and advertising as everyone is, understandably, enjoying the better weather and school being out.

Anyway, my business is growing, income is increasing significantly, I have tons of awesome ideas for this year, and I am just extremely excited about everything. I really love my business and I don’t know where I would be without it.

The business is doing well and I’m very happy with it. I’ve been catching myself saying “Life is really good” a LOT lately. And, I mean it. Life is really good.

If you are interested in starting a blog of your own, I created a tutorial that will help you start a blog of your own for cheap, starting at only $3.49 per month (this low price is only through my link) for blog hosting. In addition to the low pricing, you will receive a free website domain (a $15 value) through my Bluehost link if you purchase, at least, 12 months of blog hosting. FYI, if you are asking yourself “can you make money blogging?” – my top tip is to be self-hosted. This is essential if you want to monetize your blog as you will appear more professional and this will help you monetize your blog tremendously. My blogging income did not take off until after I switched to self-hosted WordPress.

I started my income reports back in 2012. Please click here to find them all.

Breakout of April 2016 income – $71,761.30:

The number above is for the month of April and before any fees and expenses (some fees and expenses that lower the amount above total around $1,200 (rounded up), which include virtual assistants, technical assistance, newsletter expenses, PayPal fees, etc., however, this does not include taxes) being taken out. After expenses and fees, I made approximately $70,561.30.

Please keep in mind that I work for myself when you read my monthly income report. This means I have to cover taxes (which are over 30%), health insurance, and all other benefits/expenses that an employer may provide.

Check out The Ultimate Guide To Making Money Blogging for all of the different ways you can make money through a blog.

Below are some of my other monthly online income reports. I publish an online income update every month but only included some of them below as it would be a very long list. If you head on over to my income page you can find all of my monthly income reports from the past few years.

Comparisons and 2016 online income total:

  • Total income in April of 2016: $71,761
  • Total income in March of 2016: $72,196
  • Difference: -$434.70
  • Total in 2016: $238,346

Blog news.

Making Sense of Cents is doing well and I’m very happy with everything. Overall, traffic remained the same in April and I received around 500,000 page views.

Below are several blog-related updates:

  • Last month I worked ahead on blog posts and I’m now over one month ahead. It is a great feeling, especially right now when I am working on a digital product on my affiliate marketing strategies. Plus, we are moving the RV a lot this month and traveling, so having less work makes traveling much more enjoyable.
  • In April, I switched to ConvertKit. Aweber was great, but I’ve been hearing amazing reviews about ConvertKit from several bloggers. It sounds like ConvertKit will be much better for my business, so I’m excited to give it a try.
  • I’m taking an online course for creating and launching a successful ebook – BookBoss. Highly recommend!
  • In March, I gave up Tailwind and starting using BoardBooster. Tailwind was great, but I needed something that would help me save more time. BoardBooster takes a moment to set up in the beginning, but then it runs very smoothly from there. I highly recommend checking out BoardBooster and using it for your blog! I love how much less time I now spend on Pinterest.

Also, I have received many questions recently about how I’m staying connected to the internet so that I can work and travel in my RV at the same time. I use a Verizon Mifi and I am able to stay connected pretty much anywhere with it. It really comes in handy because you can’t always trust free wifi. Sometimes free wifi is slow, hard to find, or not safe. I don’t know what I would do without this device!

Featured Question: What blogging tools or resources do you recommend?

What blogging tools or resources do you recommendI feature one question from a reader in each monthly income report. Please leave a comment below if you have a question that you would like me to answer.

Many of you have wondered about what tools or resources I’ve used to improve my blog. I believe that in order to be a successful blogger, you will need to invest in learning new strategies, such as through ebooks, webinars, courses, and more.

Below are some of my favorite blogging tools and resources.

  1. Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing I earn over $50,000 a month through affiliate marketing and I share my exact strategy and tips in this very informative online course. If you’re a blogger, then you NEED this course.
  2. How To Start A WordPress Blog Tutorial – This isn’t an ebook or a course, but it is my free tutorial so that you can start a blog easily on your own. I have included every single step that you need to take and I have negotiated affordable pricing so that you can start your blog at a low price.
  3. 17 Strategies I Used To Grow My Page Views eBook – Lena Gott’s ebook is full of great information on how to increase your blog’s page views. If you are feeling stuck or if you are a new blogger, check out this ebook! Lena went from 17,000 monthly page views to 350,000 and shares all of her best tips in this ebook.
  4. Facebook Strategies Worth Sharing – I bought this ebook last month and I highly recommend it. Facebook is an area I’m working on when it comes to my blog. I’ve already read the whole thing and there are plenty of great tips. The author of this ebook grew her Facebook page from 2,000 to 100,000 followers in just 5 months! Yes, crazy, right?

As you can see, there are many great blogging resources. Each resource above covers different aspects of blogging and/or making money online. If you have the chance, I recommend getting them all and taking your time with each one.

Past featured questions:

My plans for my website and making money online.

Without plans and goals, it would be very hard to run a business. I believe that working towards a goal can help keep a person motivated.

Below are some of the areas I am currently working on:

  • Promote more. I am doing much better at promoting my articles and I’m noticing a huge improvement. One area is still Pinterest, and it brought around 220,000 clicks to my blog just in the month of April. I would like to see this number be at 500,000 or higher by the end of the year.
  • Continue learning. Other than the BookBoss course I am taking, I am also reading Strategies Worth Sharing.
  • Accept more interviews.  I took part in a few interviews in April and I was even in an article on Forbes!
  • Double my income. Yes, I said double. I would love to double 2015’s income and I think it’s possible considering how well 2015 ended. That means I will need to average around $53,000 a month. It won’t be easy, but it will be fun to attempt. Currently, I am on track with this goal!
  • Diversify my affiliate income streams. My goal is to diversify my affiliate income and have more sources.
  • Create a digital product. I’m currently working on my affiliate income digital product. You can sign up for the waitlist here. What affiliate income questions would you like me to include?
  • Increase my page views to 1,000,000 each month. I realize this is a superficial goal, but it’s quantifiable and that’s what I like about it. I would like to hit one million page views a month before the year ends. Wish me luck!

Staff writing.

I only wrote one article for a client in April and I actually have none planned for May. As you can tell, I’m taking staff writing very slowly. This is because I’m trying to spend more time on creating the affiliate income strategy digital product discussed above, as well as improving my blog.

I believe that making this change and focusing more on my blog instead of freelancing has really helped me. Ever since I made the shift to focus on my blog and my own business, I have seen an increase in the amount of income I am earning as well as a better work-life balance. I think this is because I am a lot less scattered now that I have one main focus.

Affiliate income.

Overall, I generated $54,972.10 in affiliate income in April, as outlined above.

Affiliate income was nearly the same from the previous month, and consists of a significant part of my business income. It’s something that I really love due to how passive it can feel. It makes full-time traveling much more enjoyable when I know I can bring in an income while having a ton of fun exploring new places.

I recommend checking out my online course for bloggers, Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. I earn over $50,000 a month through affiliate marketing and I share my exact strategy and tips in this very informative online course. If you’re a blogger, then you NEED this course.

How was April for you? Are you interested in earning income online?

I have been anxiously awaiting your April income report for the past week! I am so happy to see how successful you continue to be. These are my types of income goals a few years from now! I’m excited about your upcoming ebook! I can’t wait for it to be released as I will definitely be reading it! Thanks for the continued inspiration!!!

    Amanda

  7. Great month! Thank you for listing out all the income streams you find and being very open about switching providers or changing tactics. My blog question for you is “when you find yourself in a content writing rut, what helps you get out? What inspires you?” Thanks!
    The Green Swan

    1. Great question! I’ll include that one for next month most likely 🙂

  8. Apathy Ends

Impressive as usual! Thanks for publishing these and showing us how it is done!

  9. Monica

I am so thankful that I came across your blog a few months ago. I continue to be encouraged by your success. Thank you for your transparency in your income reports. It is so helpful for me to read on those days when I’m anxiously writing and waiting. Great job!

  10. I switched to ConvertKit a few months ago and it’s made such a huge difference for me – totally worth it. Great job and thx for the mention!

    1. Yes! I really love it so far.

  11. Damn girl! This is out of hand! haha.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on Convert Kit.

We switched from Aweber to Drip. (Getdrip.com)
But we thought about Convert Kit too.

    -Derek

  12. CRUSHING IT!!! Love it 🙂 I am so glad to see you holding on to this income level!! I love pretty much all of the resources you’re mentioning above, too. I couldn’t blog without them!

  13. Aliyyah @RichAndHappyBlog

Wow! That’s more than most people make in a year. I love that you are vouching for affiliate income at a time when a lot of bloggers are switching towards making income from selling their own products/services. Affiliate income is much more passive. I hope to reach your level at some point.

    1. Thanks! I’m hoping to earn money from products as well. I want to be more diversified 🙂

  14. Thank you for being so transparent about what is working for your blog! It really inspires me to work hard on my own blog. I’m especially wondering how best to reinvest back in my blog, so that’s really interesting to read about. I realize blogging isn’t one size fits all, but this definitely gives me ideas that I can use with my own readers.

  15. Kalie @ Pretend to Be Poor

That’s awesome, Michelle. I didn’t realize how much affiliate income you had from Bluehost. Very impressive.

  16. This is awesome, Michelle. I am looking forward to “My affiliate income strategy.” I will definitely be signing up for the wait list. Thanks for publishing these income reports – such great inspiration. 🙂

    1. My affiliate income online course should be ready by June. Stay tuned 🙂

  17. Congrats on a wonderful month. I’m working hard on trying to get more affiliate income generated. i have a couple post that I think will do well in the next month or two.

  18. WOW amazing month Michelle, congratulations!!!

  19. Moses

That was the worst month for me. I made $0.01. No affiliate marketing, only adsense. I do promote but not that much. March was better.

    1. How long have you been blogger?

      1. Moses

        about nine months now.

  20. Well done Michelle! Youre an inspiration to us all and I very much enjoy reading your blog.

I have also joined your waiting list, and very much look forward to your amazing insight and experience!

  21. Lindsey

April was a breakthrough month for me. I ended up finally getting 2k page views! Which is exciting because in March I got around 200-300. I’m still struggling to get any income from it. My google adsense account currently sits at about $1 and my amazon associate account is around $6 since january. I can’t wait to be as successful as you are!

  22. Tyler @ Oddball Wealth

Great job this month, thanks for sharing!

  23. I love reading your income reports Michelle. They’re just so inspiring.

I actually scheduled out content for the next month, and I’m so happy about it. This will give me more time to work on other projects.

Also, I recently signed up for Board Booster too. I love how once everything is set up, it does all the work for you. Although, I’m still using Tailwind to schedule a few pins as well.

I signed up for your waitlist, so excited!

    1. Yeah, I’m still using both Tailwind and BoardBooster. Right now I just use Tailwind to schedule other people’s pins, and then I use BoardBooster for my own pins. I’m mainly just doing this because I paid for a full year of Tailwind so I figured I should use it, haha!

  24. Nayeli

I am so happy for you Michelle! It’s great to see how much you’ve grown and I am happy to hear that you are creating a digital product, I’m sure it will do great.

I also wanted to thank you for your encouraging posts, and guess what… I finally launched my blog! I haven’t started to promote it just because there is not a lot of content yet. Nonetheless, thank you for giving me confidence to put myself out there and not let fear keep me from trying something new.

    1. Thank you! Congrats on starting your blog 🙂

  25. Congrats on an amazing month!! Just got on your waiting list b/c I could sure use some tips with affiliates. Can’t wait 🙂

  26. Just signed up for PicMonkey through your link on the recommendations page. Tried it out on my blog and worked well. I still need to work on my aesthetics, but I think this will definitely help my blog. Thanks for the recommendation and keep up the good work!

  27. Congrats for your income. Reading income reports are very useful as it tells how much one have worked hard and what are the best practices followed to make money.

  28. Francesca

Congrats on your great month 🙂 very inspiring! Thanks for breaking it all down as well, this is the most helpful part 🙂 are you travelling all over America in your RV?

    1. Yes, you can read all about our RV travels here – https://www.makingsenseofcents.com/tag/rv 🙂

    2. Francesca,

That is a good questions because full-time affiliates and bloggers can work online from anywhere as they’re not confined to living in any state. As long as they can access their money through ATM and otherwise that’s all that matters. Right, Michelle? 🙂

  29. Thanks for sharing these every month! I always look forward to reading your income reports, they are so inspiring! I definitely plan to share income reports on my blog whenever I have more than a few dollars here and there.

I started using BoardBooster last month too, although I never used Tailwind. I am pretty happy with BB so far.

  30. Some people think that they can get rich quick overnight with blogging and internet marketing. While that’s a dream within itself, earning those kinds of affiliate revenues like what you posted is very possible for anyone who creates valuable content daily and retains a long term outlook where they desire their business blog to be in the next 5 to 10 years. Thanks for keeping us inspired, Michelle! 🙂

  31. Another impressive month! Very Inspiring and great that you were featured in Forbes…Thanks for Sharing!

  32. Mrs. CTC

This is insane Michelle, very impressive.

Congratulations, it looks like hard work paying off!

  33. Can you elaborate more on the Izea/SponsoredTweets part? I’m a member there and most tweet opportunities I see are for like $1.00. Obviously you have a larger audience than I do (haha!) but I feel like that’s so low, I can’t imagine anyone making as much as you do each month from that alone! Am I missing something?

    1. I’m very picky with what I accept on Izea and SponsoredTweets. Most of the income is from a sponsored post, so that’s why it seems so big. I think I’ve only done one or two SponsoredTweets through them and they are usually low paying so I don’t do them too often.

      1. Maricela Cruz

        Hi Michelle,

Is it worth “upgrading” the creator membership to Basic or Pro? Also I’m still confused on what you man as far as sponsored post in your response above…

        1. I’ve only ever had the free membership on there. A sponsored post is a post on my blog.

  34. You’re kicking butt Michelle! Keep up the good work.

    1. Thanks! Hope you are doing well!

  35. Great month! Now you can quit working for the year =)

  36. Another great month in the books! Congrats. I totally just purchased that FB strategies worth sharing. My FB is not a winner right now, lol!

    1. Awesome! I’m sure you will love it 🙂

  37. Kathleen @blueeyedbabies

I love reading your income reports!! They are amazing! I recently started doing them for myself, but I have only been blogging since the beginning of the year…crazy right?! They have been a great way to reflect on what I’ve been doing. Thank you for the inspiration!

  38. Amazing numbers, wish I can get to this point one day. Need to build my blog traffic up a bit more though.

  39. Leanne

Wow. That’s just amazing. Congratulations on your success!

I’m curious as to what you’re doing with all that money since it seems like your cash flow has increased so quickly – does it ever feel overwhelming emotionally that things are growing so fast? Do you have some sort of investment strategy, or are you just stockpiling? I can’t imagine that RVing costs $70k a month, after all 😉 Not, of course, that it’s actually any of my business – just curiosity.

    1. Right now we are just saving and investing like crazy. While I LOVE blogging, we are saving as much as we can for early retirement just in case something happens in the future.

  40. Diversifying blogging income into real estate might also be a good option Michelle since you’re now a full time freelancer like I. Just a helpful thought. 🙂

  41. Carlin

Your blog income is insane! I loooove it! It seems so easy to make money blogging when reading great reports like yours… I hope to hit your numbers one day.

  42. william Henderson

Congratulations! Your income reports have truly inspired me in continuing to grow in my online business. Keep them coming and thanks for sharing!

  43. Great income report! I’ll be taking a look at one of the courses you mentioned above on Pinterest. I haven’t been working on my blog at all for months – but Pinterest is my highest traffic source so figured I should figure that out as I start to work on my blog more seriously.

I’m still going through Elite Blog Academy slowly, and will have an actual blog design next month. I know I can do it since I do know what I’m doing – for me it’s just a schedule and consistency that I need to stick with. So, just working on narrowing down my content more, a good blog content calendar, and getting to it. 🙂

I remember my one blog was around the time you started – I actually remember when your blog first started in 2011. The blog I started in 2011 I sold in 2013. Kind of wish I kept up with it but glad I moved on at the time to work on some other things going on in my personal life.

  44. Great post,It always inspires me to check out income reports of fellow bloggers..Thanks for sharing

  45. webat

Congrad for hitting 70k. Very insiprational post of this most. Hope you will soon reach the figure one.

  46. It’s quite impressive to see that you earn this much from Bluehost. Does this all come from the “How to Start a Blog” article? Because if it is, then it’s quite amazing!

  47. These income reports are awesome. I don’t expect to ever make $71,000 in a month, but even if I do 10% as well as you, that’s still $7,100…not exactly a disappointing figure in itself.

  48. Wow, Another best Month For you, good luck for next Month also.

  49. Reji

    Hi Michelle,

I am here from Matthew Woodwards blog and glad that I find one more very impressive blog that I have to follow for the coming days.

    Best regards

    Reji Stephenson

  50. Anne Lauria

WOW! I cannot believe how your income keeps growing! I recently went back through and read through each income report and I’m floored at how much it’s increased for you. You are truly an inspiration to bloggers out there and proof that blogging can provide a solid income!

  51. Heather Salinas

    Hello Michelle,

First, I have to say I love your blog and I love how informative and detailed yet simple your blog is!

I am thinking about starting a blog and your site has given me sooooo much of the information if not everything I have been looking for. However, I did have one question I hope you can help me with, I am just curious how much you made, if you made anything your first month of blogging? I have looked at your financial reports and they are outstanding, but I could not find the first month, maybe you can help me out and give me some hope so I can jump on this blogging thing. lol

Thank you for all you do!
    God Bless.

    1. Hello! I don’t think I made anything the very first month. I didn’t start my blog ever thinking that I would try to make money from it, so I didn’t even try until about 6 months in. I’m sure I could have made money sooner. I started it as a hobby.

  52. I was looking at using Pinterest for traffic on my blog and remembered you having mentioned Tailwind before, I just started using it in conjunction with Hootsuite but I can’t see anything in your reports about the amount of traffic it generates or the quality of traffic it sends? I wondered if you could shine a light on that as I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth investing my time in it 🙂 Tia xx

    1. Hello! I always include the amount of traffic it generates next the “Promote More” section of my income updates 🙂 The quality of traffic is great.

      1. Ah yes I see thank you, I was on the lookout for a more detailed show of the traffic source that showed pages per visit, time spent on the site, bounce rate etc. but thank you anyway and keep up the amazing work you’re an inspiration <3 xx

  53. Thanks so much for sharing these income reports, it is both inspiring and motivating to see how far you have come, especially for those of us just starting out. The blogging world is always changing and it seems like there is always research to do and new information to stay on top of!

  54. Jordan Sanders

Since you like sharing your income reports why are you not posting actual real screenshots from your affiliate accounts? The random screenshot of a random graph is in no way an income report. Why not shot show us the real proof since your claiming such large profits. Thanks.

    1. Hey Jordan, thank you for your comment. This whole blog post is an income report, not just the graph. I don’t know of many other bloggers who post screenshots of their affiliate accounts, and if I posted screenshots, some people would still say that wouldn’t be enough, so it would just never end. That being said, I am sharing screenshots of my affiliate earnings in my Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing course as it is directly related to what I’m teaching, though. If you’d like, you can email me directly and I can send you some of the screenshots from the course.

  55. Very inspiring to read to this! I have been blogging close to 4 years now and while I make money, it is not enough to even call it as a part time income. I have to learn a lot still about affiliate marketing and your post is a great resource in regards to that. Pinning it to refer later 🙂 Thanks!

    1. I hope you’ve signed up for my affiliate marketing course 🙂 http://www.makingsenseofcents.com/waitlist

  56. Zaidi

Thank you for this awesome article, full of valuable sources that accentuate the lights of the big positives, in our fabulous internet world, really, a sublime portal, wonderful are these large bases of successes.

  57. Amit

    Awesome. Wonderful month for you.
You are getting good income from bluehost.
    Thanks for sharing.

  58. Your blog income reports were truly inspiring when you were consistently reporting them every month. I hope you bring them back. Sometimes, I get a little discouraged myself and feel a tidbit uplifted when I read your blog income reports. Now that I’m creating more content for the website, I hope you’ll reconsider Michelle posting your up affiliate and blog income monthly reports. Thank you 🙂

  59. I miss those blog posts where you used to consistently blog about your monthly income reports. I hope you get around to doing them again in the near future. Reading your monthly income reports was so motivating. 🙂
