Check out my blogging income report. #makemoneyblogging #bloggingincome #incomereportWelcome to June’s online income report where I show you how I made money online last month. It’s time to look at this month’s update and track how I did.

If you’re new here, you may be wondering why I would want to publish my online income report each month. You can simply skip to the next section if you are not new here.

This all started out as my extra income report because in the beginning it was all about the money I was earning from my side jobs. In my side income reports from the beginning, I included all of the income I made except for what I made at my day job (that was a fixed amount).

However, I left my day job as a financial analyst in October of 2013 and now my monthly income reports consist of the many ways I make a living each month.

Many people have asked why I would ever want to publicly post my income each month. Some think I’m crazy, and some are glad I’m open about what I’m doing. Whatever you think, I enjoy publishing my monthly online income reports and I share them publicly for three main reasons:

  • Before I started blogging, I knew nothing about side hustling and making money online. I didn’t think side jobs were worth the effort, and I thought the only way to significantly increase your income was through raises and promotions at your full-time job. If it weren’t for others publishing their monthly income reports each month, I don’t know if I would have ever tried side hustling. I want to help show others the positives in side hustling and how it can change a person’s life. There are many different ways to make money online, and I like to share my story each month to help motivate others to improve their financial situation by making more money.
  • Secondly, I like to publish my income reports because it’s a way for me to look back, learn from my mistakes and see what areas need improvement. I use my monthly income reports as a way to track how I’ve done, sort of like a journal.
  • Lastly, I like to show others that making side money is possible and that there are many legitimate ways to make money from your home. If you are looking for information on the many ways to make money online, I published the article Monthly Income Report Roundup – My Favorite Income Bloggers that showcases many awesome bloggers who are kind enough to share their income with the public each month. I often get asked by readers “Can you make money blogging?” Yes! Just a few years ago, I didn’t think making money online was possible at all. Now, I realize that it’s possible and I’m here to show you how I do it.

I know I say this every month, but it’s the truth. Life is great now that I’m my own boss. I look forward to each and every day and it’s a wonderful feeling. I truly love waking up each and every morning.

Above are just a few of the reasons for why I enjoy publishing my monthly income reports. I like to show others that you don’t have to hate your job and hate your life. You can make changes to your life and make money in a way that allows you to truly enjoy the life you are living. I’m not saying that you have to LOVE your job, I’m just saying that your job should at least allow you to do what you like to do outside of work (whether that be spending time with loved ones, painting, hiking, etc.).

How was my online income in June?

June was another great month for income and my second highest month for income ever. The summer months are always supposedly a little slow so I’m interested to see what the fall will bring since the summer months have been great for me despite this.

June was a very busy month though. I had a few trips in May that caused me to fall behind a little bit in June. This then spilled into June and is spilling into July as well. I’m hoping that this month I will get ahead again. I really need to sit down, eliminate any distractions, and get as much work done as I can.

Like I say every month, the business is going well and I am very happy with it. Things around here seem to be improving significantly, both in regards to income as well as work/life balance.

I’ve always been very excited about my business, but I am more excited than ever for the future. I have so many plans and everything is going very well.

Anyway, in June I earned $26,171 in business income, before expenses.

If you are interested in starting a blog of your own, I created a tutorial that will help you start a blog of your own for cheap, starting at only $3.49 per month (this low price is only through my link) for blog hosting. In addition to the low pricing, you will receive a free blog domain (a $15 value) through my Bluehost link if you purchase at least 12 months of blog hosting. FYI, if you are asking yourself “Can you make money blogging?”, my top tip is to be self-hosted. This is essential if you want to monetize your blog as you will appear more professional and this will help you monetize your blog tremendously. My blogging income did not take off until after I switched to self-hosting.

The number above is for the month of June and before any fees and expenses (some fees and expenses that lower the amount above total around $2,700, which include virtual assistants/staff writers for my other websites, technical assistance on my websites, newsletter expenses, PayPal fees, etc., however, this does not include taxes) being taken out. After expenses and fees, I made approximately $23,471.

Below are some of my other monthly side income reports. I publish an online income update every month but only included some of them below as it would be a very long list. If you head on over to my extra income page you can find all of my monthly income reports from the past few years.

Blog news.

Making Sense of Cents is still doing well and I still enjoy blogging.

Page views are beginning to increase again and I received around 210,000 page views in June and I expect to be at around 250,000 in July.

I still need to go through many of my posts here on Making Sense of Cents and fix the formatting, change the pictures to Pinterest-worthy images, and more. I have only done around 15% of my posts so that means I still have a lot more to go! I actually didn’t work on any of this in June as I forgot yet again. I really need to sit down and dedicate a few hours to this each week as it is most likely holding me back by not doing it.

Should I add a staff writer or two?

I have been toying around with possibly hiring a staff writer or two. Currently, Making Sense of Cents is just in my voice and I’m afraid to change that.

However, having more voices with more opinions may allow Making Sense of Cents to grow more, so it’s something I am thinking about.

What do you think?

How do you build websites up to sell themFeatured Question: How do you build websites up to sell them?

For this monthly income report and all future income reports, I will be including at least one featured question from a reader. Please leave a comment below if you have a question you would like me to include.

I have had many questions related to the websites that I sold. Many of you have asked “Can you make money blogging by selling websites and how do you build them up?

In the past few months, I have sold three websites for a total of $30,000. So, yes, a blog can be built up and sold. Many blogs and websites are sold every day and I know of other bloggers who have made a profit the same way as I did too.

I had it a little easy with the websites I sold. I sold all three of them to the same person, and it was actually a freelance client of mine. So, I didn’t have to do any marketing or anything like that.

However, I did build one from the ground up and I bought the other two and built those up as well. I worked on them for about one or two years each, employed some of the main actions I take here on Making Sense of Cents in order to grow them, and so on. It wasn’t easy work but it was doable and well worth it.

Some of the things you can do to build websites up in order to sell them include:

  • Improve the layout and design of the website. The two websites I bought and improved on my own didn’t have the best designs or layouts. I changed many things around so that the websites were more user-friendly.
  • Publish high-quality content. Many websites that are for sale out there for cheap don’t have the highest quality content. If you want to build a website, publishing quality content that ranks well in search engines and makes readers want to come back for more is important.
  • Increase engagement and social media numbers. Another important area to work on is to increase the amount of engagement that the site receives such as through comments and social media interactions.
  • Improve and increase the website’s income. If you want to build websites in order to sell them for top dollar, then you will want to increase the amount of income that the site makes. For the two websites I bought, the websites were bringing in nearly no income but towards the end were earning much more each month than what I even bought them for. This helped me sell them because it showed that the income was growing, even with minimal work.

My plans for my website, online income, and making money online:

  • Create a product to sell – I am slowing preparing to create an ebook. This summer is a crazy one for me though, so I will most likely not be able to devote time to it until the fall of 2015.
  • Promote more – Pinterest alone brought around 65,000 clicks to my blog just in the month of June. This amount is starting to grow again (after months of being flat) and I estimate that July will bring around 75,000 clicks from Pinterest.
  • Accept more interviews. – I took on a few interviews in June but not as many as I would have liked. The summer has been insane but I’m trying to say yes to as many of them as I can!
  • Stop being shy – This is one of my goals for 2015. I am such a shy person, and it’s something I need to work on if I want to grow my business.

Staff writing, blog, and social media management.

I worked on two staff writing gigs last month and I have one more that I just signed on for in June.

June was my highest staff writing month for income in awhile and I expect July to be somewhat similar, but it could possibly be lower. This is because I worked ahead a decent amount in June and my newest gig hasn’t started yet. It may start in July but I am not positive.

Blog and social media management is still a service I enjoy providing to my clients. I plan on keeping the clients I currently have but I am no longer expanding this service to new clients due to time constraints though. Many contacted me last month which made me want to reopen this service but I am trying to focus on what is currently on my plate, while also managing a good work/life balance.

My goal right now is to further grow the sites I currently manage and own, spend more time on my blog/website coaching service, and grow my income here so that I can be more of my own boss. This will mean that I will be less diversified as most of my income will be coming from this website and related services, but I do think this is what I am truly after with my business.

Affiliate income.

The somewhat passive income that I’ve been making this year has been pretty wonderful.

I earned around $10,000 in affiliate income in June. May was definitely better, but the summer months are usually a little slower according to my affiliate managers. I am told that affiliate income usually increases in August and September.

I won’t see the payments I earned in June until 60-90 days later for most of the affiliate programs I am in, so you won’t see those amounts reflected in my monthly income reports until then.

My main form of affiliate income is through Bluehost with my How To Start A WordPress Blog On Bluehost tutorial. However, I am looking to diversify my affiliate income and I have been researching other affiliate programs so that everything isn’t so reliant on Bluehost. I have been doing somewhat well with diversifying my affiliate income so far though, with around $3,000 last month coming from other affiliate programs.

  • Selling items from our home – $0
  • Miscellaneous (not related to blogging and online income) – $0
  • Mystery shopping – $0

When you see my monthly income each month please keep in mind that I work for myself. This means I have to cover taxes (which are over 30%), health insurance, and all other benefits/expenses that an employer may provide.

Comparisons and 2015 online income total (before taxes)

  • Total business income for June: $26,171

  1. Amazing month. You’ve more than doubled your earnings from June 2014. Affiliate income is something I have trouble with getting leads on, but it’s clearly doable. Good luck to you in July. 🙂

    1. Yes, definitely doable! Just need to find the right programs, a product/service that fits, and tell the truth 🙂

  2. Another amazing month – well done you! Affiliate income is definitely something I want to look into as you and other pf bloggers seem to make a decent amount from it every month 🙂

  3. Amazing month for you, honestly I like to read incomereports, ecause they can be example and encouragement for someone that would like to do same thing…however good job!!!

  4. Inspiring as always. I have no doubt you put in a lot of hours and effort to achieve those results so those numbers are well deserved.

Hope it keeps growing for you!

  5. One of these days my income report will have an extra “0” at the end of its number and be somewhat on par with yours! 🙂

  6. Do you find the work is quite reliable month to month or have you noticed seasonal peaks? I used to work in tourism and we would have to make sure our summer income would be significant to cover the winter months which brought in little work

    1. I’ve always heard that the summer for blogging income is usually a little slower, but I’ve never really noticed too much. You can see all of my income reports and the amounts listed here – https://www.makingsenseofcents.com/extra-income

  7. Wow! Way to overcome this traditionally slow time of year! Your story amazes me! While I’m not trying to create a blogging empire, I’d love for my side gig to bring in some extra income and your monthly updates always inspire me that I can turn this blog into anything I want if I put in the effort!

  8. Your June has almost kept up with your April! Still, it looks so good! Nice results. Blogging can really take that bar up high.

  9. We hit the 20K mark for the first time ever in June. I don’t expect to do it again for a while, but it felt awesome! Great job on your spectacular month, Michelle!

  10. Amy @ DebtGal

    Congratulations on another great month!

As for reader questions, as someone who blogs very part-time, I’m curious about how you structure your days. Not only what time you get up, start working, etc., but how you balance client work, your own blog, and working with your consulting clients.

    1. I’m slowly working on a post all about this actually 🙂 Hopefully I will finish it soon!

  11. Jesse Gernigin

Michelle you absolutely crushed it! Keep at it.

  12. Great stuff Michelle — incredibly impressive and an inspiration to everyone out there 🙂

I’d love to hear your thoughts on what % of your time is spent on these 3 line items: staff writing, managing websites and blog coaching. They seem to make up 20% of your monthly income, but I suspect they take up more than 20% of your time (though I could be wildly off).

I just read “The ONE Thing” by Gary Keller and I’m trying to become much more attuned to focusing and spending my time, energy and resources in the best way possible.

I’m sure we’ve both always been the worker bees in our businesses and it is really important to take a step back and look at it from the point of view of a CEO rather than a worker.

In your case I wonder if staff writing and blog management are value-added or if those many hours would be better spent on building your two major line items? For me I’ve long been doing individual travel hacking consulting and now I’m moving more into focusing on getting people to Disney world and to taking my Travel Miles 101 course. It’s more efficient for me and better for the user too, which is a great combo!

    1. Thanks Brad!

Yes, they do make up for more than 20% of my time. I’m working on increasing my affiliate income so I have no problem with spending more time in other areas that I care about and enjoy since more and more of my income is becoming passive. It is definitely something to think about though!

  13. Amazing job Michelle! I love how you’re trying to diversify your affiliate income. Diversifying my freelance income is my main focus right now since what I’m doing now takes so much time and effort.

  14. I love reading your income reports; they are inspiring. I have a blog, but I get very little traffic. I know that you recommend moving over to a self-hosted site, but I am skeptical that I am going to invest money only to get nothing in return. How can I get more traffic and earn some side income by being self-hosted instead of just using blogpost? Any advice that can help me make the jump?

    1. Being self-hosted is what I believe what helped significantly increase my blogging income and traffic.I think readers and companies take you more seriously, and you are able to receive more interviews, income, and views because of it.

  15. alana

No staff writers! Interesting guests posts are nice from time to time but staff writers are the kiss of death.

    1. Thanks for your input. This is exactly why I’m asking 🙂

  16. Awesome job! I’d love to be where you are at someday. Mostly because my dream job is to be able to work from home blogging. And here I am, getting ready for an interview for a job that only pays minimum wage. Sigh.

Right now, I’m just starting small by trying to find 3 ways to make extra income this month; selling my clothes, virtual assisting, etc. Hoping to hit an extra $200-$300 each but it is way too early for that. I’m trying consignment, as well as some online resources to get rid of my clothes.

    1. Good luck with your interview! 🙂 I hope you are one day able to reach your dream job.

      1. Thanks! I got the job. Woo hoo! So just going to keep working on the blogs, and finding more ways to save money. Trying to pay off some debts I have.

  17. Thank you! 🙂 Congrats on your new blog.

  18. You’re such an inspiration Michelle! Congrats on yet another fantastic month 🙂 I actually just started making an income off my blog in June (my first $100-woo! Have to start somewhere, right?) and am going to share my very first blog income report later this week. Thanks for all the encouragement you provide by sharing your income with us all!

    1. Thanks Christina! Congrats to you too!

  19. Yes, that really stinks about that. I used to live in Missouri and experienced that all the time!

  20. I am always inspired and challenged by your income posts. How I wish I can also reach even just half of your income. But I am so grateful to you for encouraging us all to be like you.

  21. Congratulations, Michelle!!! I’ve been following you on IG and life looks awesome lately!!! You definitely seem to be living the dream!! 🙂

    1. Yes, life has been great! 🙂

  22. Congrats on a wonderful June. My June was great. It was the highest amount of income that I’ve made on the site. Things are truly moving in the right direction.

  23. Yes, I’m not sure what I will do about staff writers. I have had a few people tell me that they don’t want staff writers on my blog so we shall see 🙂

Great job on negotiating the raise!

  24. Stephen

Incredible! You’re at a point where I’m sure most are envying. Keep up the great work!

  25. Kim

Congrats on another great month. I think staff writers would be a nice break for you and not detrimental if you can find people who can compliment what you write about but maybe bring a different perspective. In my optometry practice, I always wanted to have a very different doctor besides myself so we could hit every demographic in case someone didn’t like females or the types of activities I participate in (small town, everyone knows me). It always seemed to work out well. Best of luck whatever you decide.

    1. Thanks Kim! I still haven’t decided what I will do. I may have to think about it over the next few months.

  26. Zascha

I love reading your income reports – they are always so inspiring! 🙂
I like the idea of a staff writer, but at the same time I understand your concerns. Maybe do it as a trial?

    1. Thanks! I haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet. I’ll think about it for a little bit 🙂

  27. Kayla @ The Jenny Pincher

Amazing! I had my highest income month (from online stuff) in June too, and I’m hoping it’ll keep growing. I love reading these posts, they are so inspirational!

  28. Dougy Hunt

Amazing effort! I am new to affiliate marketing (well, literally started yesterday). Of the sites that I have seen so far, so many promote Bluehost. They must have a really good affiliate commission rate?

    1. They have a great affiliate program. The affiliate manager I have is helpful and the overall system is easy to use!

      1. Dougy Hunt

I may have to have a looksie 🙂

Oh, and just one quick question. I find getting people to comment on my site(s) a massive uphill struggle. It can’t be rocket science, but where traffic is healthy, comments are poor. Any tips?

        1. I wouldn’t be too worried about comments but one way to possibly get more comments is to add a question at the end of a post 🙂

  29. Jessica

Great month, Michelle! I love to get a peek at your income, but I also love how happy you are being self employed. It really motivates me to do something about the full time job I hate! 🙂

  30. Another great month Michelle! Congrats on your solid month again!

  31. Alexandra @ Real Simple Finances

    Inspiring as always!

Hiring staff writers may be a great idea. While I love reading posts in your voice, you always bring on the best guest writers to share pieces. It adds nice variety, but also keeps the feel of MSOC alive.

  32. Allison @ Frugal on the Prairie

I can completely understand why you’d want a staff writer. I can’t imagine what your schedule looks like. (btw can we have a Day in the Life…?) Just make sure they have the “Michelle voice” we know and love! 🙂

    1. I have it on my to-do list to finish that post this month 🙂

  33. Awesome results! Appreciate all the detail you put into these reports each month. They have certainly kept me motivated in my quest to build online income.k

  34. Staff writers.. I think it can be done if you get the right people, and it depends on how it is presented. You could probably benefit from adding a stay at home mom writer and add that aspect into your blog. Just a thought. I used to write content for other bloggers mannyyyy years ago and I’ve done it a couple ways.

One blogger had me give her a topic, she approved it, and let me draft it in WordPress. She’d go in and add her affiliate links, and publish from there. That was an hourly rate which was predetermined weekly. So, 10 hours per week max at $x-amount an hour.

Another blogger actually let me use my affiliate links as compensation, but to me, it doesn’t seem beneficial sometimes. She really didn’t have the traffic that afforded me to be able to make anything. I wouldn’t recommend ever doing it that way anyways. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but even as a blogger, you’d lose money.

If I can recall correctly, another blogger had me help her during the holidays where we split up the commission. But she did it interesting in that she would give me a percentage of her earnings on the posts I’d write. So, she would track clicks using a plugin and would figure out the commission from there. It was interesting. I’ve never done it that way again, but I’d have to think that’s really confusing to figure out monthly.

Then there were times I was paid per post, which I preferred over the hourly rate sometimes. Some posts take hours to research into, and I tend to write lengthy posts. So, getting a commission per post vs an hourly rate is probably beneficial more to the blogger than the writer. Plus, you know it’s already done.

    1. Thanks Lisa! It’s a tough decision and I still have not made a decision.

  35. Great report! Thanks so much for being so transparent. As far as hiring a staff writer, I would say it could be a good idea. With the views you have, you could probably get some writers without having to pay. There are plenty of websites, like LifeHack (one of the sites I write for), that don’t pay, they just offer the opportunity for hundreds of thousands of people to see their work. Just something to consider. 🙂

  36. Skytech

    Hi,

Amazing and really impressed with your online income report and it has inspired me to work harder.

I’m a blogger from Malaysia and currently generating online revenue about $200 per month through Google Adsense and only joined the affiliate marketing recently. I hope to be as successful as you.

    Cheers,
    Skytech

  37. Dumb question but what is Staff Writing?

    1. Staff writing is when you write for someone else on a regular basis – like you are on their “staff.”

  38. This is my first visit on your blog and its really exciting.
I learn so many thing from these post! Thanks for being so transparent..
    -Hamim

  39. You are killing it! Congrats!! Tell me your secret 🙂

    Continued success,
    Mark

    1. I tell all of my secrets in each of my income reports 🙂

    Aren’t all blogs free?

    1. No. If you want to make money with a blog then you need to pay to run a blog.

  41. Trupti

Very inspiring and motivating post.. I am new to blogging and my first blog i published in Jan 2016. I have written around 5-6 posts. My question is when do i start monetizing it? And what should be my first step for monetizing it.. I read a lot of blogs about how to monetize your blog, but the more i read more confused i get.. Can you help?
